Two Prehistoric Archeological Sites in Egyptian Nubia
نویسنده
چکیده
The Yale University Prehistoric Expedition to Nubia was part of UNESCO'S international program to salvage the monuments of Nubia, with the direct aid of the Department of Antiquities of the United Arab Republic. The Yale Prehistoric Expedition worked in Upper Egypt and Egyptian Nubia for three field seasons during 1962-1965 inclusive (Reed, 1966). My own participation was limited to the last season, 19641965, during which time I was responsible for excavation and study of two of the archeological sites on the east bank of the Nile River, DI-21B ("Catfish Cave") and WO-2A (fig. 1). The results of these studies are presented here.

During the Nubia Salvage Campaign and the subsequent expeditions from the 1960's to the 1980's, numerous sites attributed to the Late Palaeolithic (~25-15 ka) were found in the Nile Valley, particularly in Nubia and Upper Egypt. This region is one of the few to have allowed human occupations during the dry Marine Isotope Stage 2 and is therefore key to understanding how human populations adapte...
متن کاملStrontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) variability in the Nile Valley: identifying residential mobility during ancient Egyptian and Nubian sociopolitical changes in the New Kingdom and Napatan periods.
As a successful technique for identifying residential mobility in other areas, this study investigates the feasibility of using 87Sr/86Sr analysis to track the movements of the ancient peoples of Egypt and Nubia in the Nile Valley, who interacted via trade, warfare, and political occupations over millennia. Dental enamel from faunal remains is used to examine variability in strontium sources in...
